Overview
Founded in 2015 by Dr. Chris Monroe and Dr. Jungsang Kim, IonQ emerged from more than 30 years of academic research and foundational trapped-ion breakthroughs licensed from the University of Maryland and Duke University. With early support from New Enterprise Associates, IonQ set out to bring trapped-ion quantum computing out of the lab and into real-world use, and has since grown into a global leader in quantum computing, networking and sensing.
IonQ has established partnerships with leading academic institutions, industry innovators and federal agencies, and continues to advance one of the most aggressive technology roadmaps in the field. The company is accelerating toward what it describes as the world's most powerful quantum computers, targeting 2 million qubits by 2030 to accelerate innovation in drug discovery, materials science, financial modelling, logistics, cybersecurity and defence. Its progress in quantum networking, quantum sensing, quantum security and quantum space infrastructure also positions IonQ as a builder of the foundations of the quantum internet.
Core technology
Trapped-ion qubits controlled with precision lasers and photonic interconnects, delivered through cloud-accessible quantum computers, plus quantum networking, quantum-safe security and quantum sensing systems.
